The “Summer Slide.” is a well documented learning loss that takes place when low-income students do not participate in structured summer programs. That’s why the Exodus Summer Achievement is so important.
With a direct correlation being drawn between involvement in the arts and academic achievement, Operation Exodus developed a SmartARTS curriculum for its Summer Achievement program this year. Over 200 students ages kindergarten through 8th grade will spend five weeks with us exploring theater and drama, visual arts, music and dance, architecture, and media and film.
Students are in danger of losing two months worth of learning in math over a single summer. Experts also estimate that over half of the achievement gap for low-income students in English literacy can be attributed to summer learning loss. The “summer slide,” is it is sometimes called, is particularly prevalent in students who live in inner city neighborhoods, in families that do not have the resources to offer summer enrichment opportunities.
Operation Exodus partners with Mission To The World (MTW), an international volunteer organization that sends teams around the globe to serve. Our summer achievement program would not be possible without this valuable connection to missions teams that have hearts that are open and willing to serve in NYC this summer.
Just this week, the first team in was from Trinity Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Led by Youth Director Mike Wolcott, this amazing group of young adults painted, decorated, cleaned, organized and got us ready for a summer full of fun. More importantly, they prepared and led all of our student praise and worship times for the week.
As always, as the week came to a close, there were hugs and a few tears as the two groups said goodbye until next time.
Special thanks to MTW (Mission to The World) for sending this wonderful group-they have refreshed our space, and our hearts!
Thank you Trinity, and everyone that supported your team financially or with prayer.
