The Art of Education

As part of our fall schedule for middle school students, Operation Exodus will once again be taking part in a playmaking series with director Josh Lewis. An experienced writer, director and educator, Lewis works with the Atlantic Theater Company, the 52nd Street Project, and many New York public schools.

This playwriting process was originally developed by the 52nd Street Project, an organization that pairs inner city students with theater professionals who guide them into writing plays. The works are then performed by adult actors, who commit to the characters and dialogue with the same authenticity as an adult play. The results are amazing, as audiences are given a glimpse into the minds of young people, and begin to see the world through their eyes.

Together We Can (Juntos Podemos)

Since we ran the program last spring, we have been taking a serious look at the ways our students, and their families lives were impacted by participating in this program. Students looked forward to writing time, and spent a minimum of 30 minutes each week absorbed in their work. The growth in confidence and self esteem as they saw their stories performed in front of a live audience was beyond what we could have imagined. Parents were moved by seeing their children in a new light.

This fall we will repeat the process with a new group of students, and involve several of last year’s playwrights as student leaders in the program.

Through these plays, we saw the world through the eyes of these young-almost adult-students. Issues such as immigration, teen pregnancy, and loss brought to light the many serious challenges they face. However, we also witnessed their humor, and resilience in the face of adversity, proving that we can learn a lot from our youth.

Operation Exodus would like to include you as a sponsor in our 2nd Annual, “Mi Historia, Mi Corazon.”

The plays will once again be produced as part of our annual fundraiser which will be on February 9th, 2017. The total cost per student to participate, and for their play to be produced is only $1,000. Sign up for a monthly donation for six months, and that comes to just $166 a month!

Please consider sponsoring a student, and give them this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for their story to be told, and their voice to be heard. This way, they will learn the most important thing of all…they matter.

We thank you for your support.
